Inaugural Tintenbar-East Ballina Old Buggers Day a success
Glory days were relived when the Tintenbar-East Ballina Cricket Club held its inaugural Old Buggers Day at Kingsford Smith South cricket field on Saturday.
While current players batted against a hot Casino Cavaliers attack on an extremely warm day, the Old Boys hung around the barbecue drinking a few cold ones and reminiscing about their careers.
The club had its origins in the 1970s, starting out with only one team, but has grown to be one of the leading clubs in local cricket.
Meticulously-recorded statistics were on hand to remind players of long-forgotten achievements. These records are a tribute to the work done by club stalwart John Wallbank.
Tony Porter was the ‘ideas man’ behind the day, and the feedback he received was that it should become an annual event.
Tony believes that the Australia Day long weekend is the best time for the event. “There’s too much going on in the lead-up to Christmas, so after Christmas is ideal,” he said.
It wasn’t just cricket achievements that were bragged about. Tony’s brother Wayne, a staunch Manly Sea Eagles fan, wore his premiership cap and was only too happy to remind people who won last year’s NRL grand final.
When Ballina Info lined the boys up for a picture, Wayne made a point of getting a shot taken of his cap. So here it is!
For the record, the ‘Bar boys didn’t have one of their better days with the bat. Casino’s veteran quick Al Nowlan took advantage of some life in the wicket to take 5/36 off 22 overs — all bowled.
Tintenbar recovered from a shaky 4/23 to reach 163, led by Kane Hamilton (46), Mick Warburton (26) and Mick Gabriel (24).
Meanwhile, the club is organising a ladies day for January 31 at KSS commencing at 1.30pm.
This invite is for all partners of players and their friends. Wine, champagne, beer and soft drink will be provided. Ladies are to bring plate of nibblies for a fun afternoon.
“Pass the word around and let the girls have a relaxing afternoon at the cricket on the grog,” said Brett ‘Bluey’ Crawford.
