Lennox Market a cleaner, greener event this year

markets2The Lennox Community Market will be a cleaner and more sustainable event this year thanks to the organisers and the North East Waste Forum’s ‘Waste Wise Events’ program.

The market, held on the eastern shore of Lake Ainsworth on the second and fifth Sunday of the month, is taking the first steps to separating and minimising its waste and will hold its first ‘Waste Wise’ market on February 8.

Event co-ordinator Joni Teal contacted the Forum for assistance in late 2008. A waste audit was conducted to provide the baseline information needed to plan a new waste system.

“Getting into the habit of sorting our rubbish is a vital first step in recycling. Our challenge is to reduce the quantity of market waste which ends up in landfill. We already see a lot of shoppers with reusable bags so I know people are aware of that we can all play a part in reducing our waste,” said event organiser Joni Teal

Lennox joins a number of other markets across the NEWF region, including the popular Bangalow Markets, that have embraced a more environmentally sound approach. Steps they intend to take include:

Installing recycling bins for plastics, glass and aluminium

Installing organic bins for food waste and compostable products

Encouraging stall holders to reduce their waste and use products that can be recycled or composted.

North east Waste Forum business waste reduction co-ordinator, Jeanie McKillop, said: “The market is a community event that attracts locals and visitors to a beautiful natural setting.

“It is great to see the organisers work to improve their environment and reduce their carbon footprint – it’s a bonus to the community on top of the service already provided by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, which the market supports.”
