Bicycles Abroad project features in gallery exhibition
The Northern Rivers Community Gallery in Ballina has a diverse series of exhibitions running throughout May.
Gallery 2 will feature Jenny Clarke – Australian Goodwill Bicycles Abroad.
This photographic exhibition focuses on the needless disposal of bicycles and promotes an alternative to this practice by urging people to donate unwanted bicycles to Australian Goodwill Bicycles Inc, now located in Ballina.
Australian Goodwill Bicycles, since its inception in 1999, has distributed over 10,000 bikes to Indigenous communities in Central Australia and developing countries including Africa, East Timor and the Solomon Islands.
Bicycles are a sustainable and non-polluting means of transport and are a vital mode of transport for people in developing communities.
With 200,000 bikes dumped each year in NSW alone, this important service also helps to reduce the number of bikes dumped or sent to landfill.
Members of the public are invited to attend the opening of this exhibition at 2pm on Saturday 9 May. The exhibition runs until 7 June.
Gallery 3 will showcase the work of emerging local artist Amy Black.
Amy works with mixed media on paper to create bright contemporary works with a focus on pre-loved objects.
Amy says of her work: “I have a compulsion to buy and process pre-loved and discarded objects, old sewing magazines, teacups, fabrics, letters, photos, my work draws from that.
“I love mechanical means of reproduction, the choices and possibilities are endless. I love paper. I love to be loose and free-flowing”.
This exhibition will also open at 2pm on Saturday 9 May.
Gallery 4 will present the first artist-in-residency program held at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery.
The Gallery has successfully secured a CASP (Country Area Support Project) Grant which has enabled the Gallery to invite Indigenous artist Penny Evans to conduct a residency program within the gallery space during May.
Penny will work with Year 11 students from local schools in a mentoring role and run a series of workshops with the students, resulting in students exhibiting works completed during the residency.
This program will run from 9 to 31 June and will include public programs which will be advertised closer to the date.
For more information on coming events, visit or phone the Gallery on 6687 6167. Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
