Green education resource to tour Ballina Shire schools

greenhouseAn innovative newly redesigned education resource is set to tour schools and special events in Ballina Shire and beyond.

‘Living Green with The Green House’ is a mobile waste education program devised by the North East Waste Forum on behalf of Ballina Shire and other member councils, which will promote sustainable waste practices to the North Coast community.

The program was launched as part of Ballina Shire Council’s International Composting Week activities, by Cr Philip Silver, Mayor Ballina Shire Council at Alstonville Primary School on Wednesday, May 6.

“The Green House encourages everyone to learn about how they can actively help their local environment through adopting simple waste-less practices at home, school, work and beyond through waste avoidance, smart shopping, reuse, composting and recycling,” Cr Silver said.

“Over the past four years, the former Green House mobile waste education trailer proved to be extremely popular, visiting more than 55 schools and events, with more than 8000 people participating in its activities.

“The Green House has recently been redesigned, its resources and activities expanded and improved, and the information updated to ensure we are providing the best-quality environmental education program for our residents.”

The Living Green with The Green House Waste Education Program includes:

Free performances from ‘Waste Experts’ (produced by professional performers) whose home is ‘The Green House’. The Waste Experts provide an innovative and entertaining insight into how to live with less waste.

Games and quizzes, pledges and activities for children;

Information provided through displays, council resources and personnel;

Demonstrations including composting and worm farming;

Primary and Secondary schools kits including teacher resources, lesson plans and worksheets.

The waste education program has been designed by local councils and the North East Waste Forum (NEWF). NEWF is a group of six councils on the North Coast of New South Wales working together towards cost-effective waste management and resource recovery
solutions.

The current members include Ballina Shire Council, Byron Shire Council, Kyogle Council, Tweed Shire Council, Clarence Valley Council and Richmond Valley Council.
