Hot field for the All Girls Surf Showdown
The 17th annual All Girl Surf Showdown is set to go this weekend on the beachbreaks at Lennox Head and a superb quality field of surfers will again line up for this prestigious event.
The popular female-only surfing competition boasts an amazing history of previous winners across all divisions including current world professional champion Stephanie Gilmore, former world champ Pauline Menczer, 2008 world qualifying series champion Sally Fitzgibbons, exciting Sydney surfer Laura Enever and Lennox Head surfer and current Australian open women’s champion Jenny Boggis.
Across the divisions of Open Pro, Junior Pro, Longboard Pro, Over 28, Over 40, Under 16 and under 14 as well as Open B there are some incredibly talented competitors.
No doubt leading the pack will be 14-year-old now local girl Tyler Wright (Lennox Head).
Tyler is the current International Surfing Association (ISA) junior world champion along with current Australian junior champion, and just to add to her string of wins she of course has that amazing Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) win at World Tour level achieved at last year’s Beachley Classic.
Tyler and sister Kirby will line up in both the Open and Junior Pro divisions.
Nicola Atherton (Bronte Beach Sydney) has also entered the event and she is fresh off the ASP World Tour and competes extensively on the world stage.
With quality surfers coming from all over Australia the event continues to grow in status however this year, in line with the tough economic times, the organising squad of locals Kellie O’Brien, Max Perrot and Jenny Boggis have found things particularly tough.
“Organising this year’s event will be a labour of love for the three of us as the budget is too tight to pay ourselves for all the work involved,” Perrot said.
