Think of the environment on Friday, June 5
Ballina Shire Council is urging local residents to take three small steps toward reducing our ecological footprint this Friday 5 June, World Environment Day.
Among the things we could do might include:
• Saying ‘no’ to using plastic bags
• Walking to the shop instead of driving
• Buying a local product
• Turning off a light that no one is using
• Having a shorter shower
• Drinking tap water, rather than bottled water
• Turning off computers when not in use.
The council says these actions can help to reduce waste, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance our biological diversity and save money.
The council says it has been working to try to improve its environmental performance as well. Some of its initiatives include:
• Reducing the electricity usage in the Customer Service Centre by 8% over the past five years
• Changing over to using recycled paper for envelopes and business cards and to 80% recycled paper for all printing and copying
• Using recycled plastic outdoor furniture
• Continuing the use of smaller vehicles (including LPG and diesel vehicles) and bicycles in its fleet to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
• Supporting Landcare groups with materials, plants and waste removal
• Buying locally to support our economy.
“Every positive step we take together enhances our local environment for us, as well as the plants and animals that live here,” the council said.
“Take a few small steps to enjoy World Environment Day on Friday 5 June 2009 whilst reducing your ecological footprint. Join with council and the Lennox Head community to plant trees at Lennox Headland between 9am and noon.”
