Former World No 1 wins Wintersun Bowls

dsc03073In an indication of the high class of the field, the Wintersun Singles Bowls event held last weekend at Cherry Strret Bowling Club was won by former World No 1 and England representative David Holt.

He defeated Mark Casey, last year’s winner, 31 to 12.

The large crowd was lucky to have seen such high standard of bowls, club publicity officer Ken Clarke said.

“Holt could do no wrong in the final and rarely bowled a bad bowl,” Ken said.

“He acknowledged this in his acceptance speech after receiving a cheque for $3000 from major sponsor, Graeme Hellyar, Managing Director of Ray White Real Estate.

“Holt said Mark was unfortunate to strike him in a match where he played as good as he ever has.

“The crowd often applauded a good bowl from Casey, only to see Holt do even better the next bowl.

“Mark Casey is a class player, having represented Australia on numerous occasions, and was World Men’s Indoor Champion in 2005, so the crowd was shocked to see a wide margin. Holt led 29/3 at one stage.”

Local Viv Ross did well to reach the Quarter-Finals after winning his Section but lost to Holt 25/16.

Holt had a closer tussle with Jesse McKenzie of Merrylands in the Semi-Final where Holt won 25/22.

In the other Semi-Final, Mark Casey had a Holt-type day in his game with former Australian Women’s National Squad member Maria Rigby and won 25/4.

The big surprise was Steve Glasson who failed to win his section.
