East Ballina Lions top fundraising campaign

All those sausage sandwiches you purchase from the East Ballina Lions Club barbecues are helping a worthy cause.

In April this year the Lions Club of East Ballina took part in theĀ  Lions national project, the Lions Biggest BBQ, which is an annual event that gives Lions Clubs across the country the opportunity to support the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia in its research into the causes and a cure for childhood cancer.

This year East Ballina Lions were the largest fund-raiser in all of Queensland and northern NSW, having raised and donated $1,467.40 to the Institute.

As a result of this the Club has won a new BBQ and gas bottle from the Lions Biggest BBQ national sponsor, Barbeques Galore.

“In Australia more children die from cancer than any other disease. Over 500 new cases are diagnosed each year. Up until the 1960s cancer was generally a fatal condition in children,” East Ballina Lions member Dawn Sword said.

“Since that time medical research has come a long way and the overall cure rate has risen to over 70%.

“However, three out of every 10 children diagnosed with cancer do not survive and these are the children that we are dedicated to saving.

“Lions believe that every child deserves the right to grow up. The Lions Cord Blood and Childhood Cancer Research Appeal total now exceeds $3,800,000 and funds research being carried out in the Lions Laboratory at Children’s Cancer Institute Australia.

“East Ballina Lions would like to sincerely thank the managers of Coles Supermarket for allowing the club to hold barbecues outside their store and the ever generous Ballina public for supporting this event.”
