Prizemoney boost for 121st Byron Bay Cup meeting at Ballina

racingThe Byron Bay Cup race meeting at the Ballina Jockey Club on Sunday, August 30, will mark the 121st running of the event.

The race is also a prelude to the running of the Ballina Cup on September 10.

Despite some Statewide cutbacks in prizemoney in country NSW, the Ballina Jockey Club is, from its own resources, increasing prizemoney for the Cup to $25,000.

CEO of the Jockey Club Sarah Wills said: “This should guarantee top-quality race fields and an exciting day’s racing and also reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to make this day a premium race meeting on the Northern Rivers racing program.

“The race meeting is attracting strong support from the Byron Bay community and this is reflected in the fact that the majority of last year’s race sponsors have again committed to sponsorships in the 2009 Cup meeting.”

The SPAR supermarket chain will be sponsoring the Cup itself and only two other races remain open for sponsorship.

The Jockey Club is continuing with the very popular 100 Club concept introduced last year in which the Byron Bay community is offered the opportunity  to purchase tickets for entry into a VIP marquee where a premium package of food and beverages will be served.

Tickets will be on sale shortly through the Jockey Club and through the club’s ambassador to Byron Bay, Ross King, on 0412 361 786. Race day sponsors will also be accommodated in the VIP marquee.

“The day is being planned for excitement and fun. Not only are we expecting quality race fields but will also have live music in the form of popular Byron Bay band The Blackbirds, fashions on the field and other entertainment,” Ms Wills said.
