Lennox Point track upgrade will be welcomed

lennox-point-homeAnyone who has ever accessed Lennox Point in wet weather will welcome the news that the upgrade of the surfers’ steps at the Point is now well under way.

The construction of stairs to replace the existing surfers’ track will provide all-weather access for the surfing community to the popular Lennox Point surf break within the Lennox National Surfing Reserve.

Ballina Shire Council says the upgrade will reduce soil erosion and protect the flora and fauna of the headland, whilst providing a safer access for surfers who previously had to negotiate a dangerous, slippery mudslide down the hill in wet weather.

The stairs will be constructed using composite fibre structural members and recycled plastic decking, and has been designed to ensure minimal environmental impact, durability and increased longevity of the structure.

“This is the first structure of its kind to be built in New South Wales using the composite fibre building technology,” the council said.

“Council has previously installed two beach viewing platforms using composite fibre and recycled plastic at Flat Rock, East Ballina, overlooking Sharps Beach, and Angels Beach, replacing the older timber platforms.

“The composite fibre is a fraction of the weight of traditional building materials and up to six times stronger than steel or concrete.

“Made from polymers (plastics) reinforced with carbon, glass and/or aramid (Kevlar) fibres, composite products are flexible, durable and easy to assemble.

“With the environmental concerns in using traditional rainforest hardwood timber or treated pine that often is susceptible to termite attack, rot and potentially environmentally harmful preservatives, composite fibre offers a safe alternative which is also aesthetically pleasing, lightweight to install, easily fabricated and will never rot or rust.

“The current surf access track has been closed off for the upgrade, with a temporary alternative access provided to the south of the fenced construction site. People are asked to keep to the tracks provided.”

The track upgrade was pursued and is endorsed by the Lennox National Surfing Reserve Association. This project is funded by the NSW Department of Lands and Ballina Shire Council.

The construction work is being carried out by an EnviTE Green Corps Team with the guidance of Ballina Council staff.
