Temporary relocation of Lennox Head Market
This Sunday’s Lennox Head Market has been moved to the main street for this Sunday, August 30, and Ballina Shire Council will canvass residents to determine whether the move should be permanent.
The change in venue has come about after heavy rainfall affected the normal venue at Lake Ainsworth.
“While it has been some weeks since the last heavy rainfalls, flooding at Lake Ainsworth continues to present problems for the Lennox Head market,” Ballina Shire Council said.
“Lake Ainsworth broke it banks in April and the water has been slowly subsiding, forcing the temporary relocation of the Lennox Head market.
“While the water is now clear of the road, the site is still too wet to use for the Lennox Head Market.
“The most recent market on the 9 August was moved to the road at the southern end of Lake Ainsworth but this location will be unable to be used for the next market on August 30.
“The southern location was only able to be used for the market on the 9 August because bookings at Camp Drewe and the Sport and Recreation centre were low. Bookings for these facilities are high for the weekend of the next market on the 30 August and, as the southern road currently provides the only access to Camp Drewe and the 4WD access to the beach, the road will have to remain open.”
The council said it understands how valued the market is by the community and has decided to temporarily relocate it to the main street on 30 August. Stalls will be set up between 5am and 2pm on Sunday 30 August.
“The recent floods have raised issues about the long-term location of the market,” the council said.
“Flooding on the eastern road adjacent to Lake Ainsworth will continue to be a problem into the future. The council is also mindful of the large numbers of people using the area around Lake Ainsworth when market days coincide with school holidays and surf club activities.
“The council will therefore be assessing the success of the event in Ballina Street and will consider permanently relocating the markets to this site.
“Council staff will be consulting with residents and businesses in Ballina Street about the markets on the 30 August and the possibility that they may be held in this location on a regular basis.”
