You can still donate to the rescue helicopter appeal
Ballina Shire residents young and old hit the streets last Sunday as volunteers for the annual Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Doorknock.

Despite fantastic efforts by people such as Ben, the realities of tough economic conditions hit home, with doorknock organisers disappointed with the response to this year’s appeal. It appears there will be a shortage of $50,000 on the target of $150,000.
“It is a disheartening result, particularly as so much effort was put into the event by so many people,” said Kris Beavis, General Manager, Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.
“As a result there will be a considerable shortfall in our budget.
“Perhaps it reflects on the economic problems throughout our communities, though we did note that many volunteers who had committed their time did not turn up on the day, which meant that many homes were not visited.
“However, we would like to express our sincere thanks to the many volunteers, drivers, co-ordinators and community groups who generously gave their time and energy.”
The service is still hopeful of achieving its target of $150,000.
“We thank the thousands of people who donated on the weekend, and we earnestly ask others who would still like to donate, to please do so this week or next,” said Mr Beavis.
Donations to Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter can be made at any Westpac Bank, online at www.helirescue.com.au or by phoning 6627 4444 during business hours or by posting back the donation envelope or slip.
“Last week our crews were involved in seven vital missions and we ask that people do not take the service for granted. We rely on public support to keep the rescue helicopter flying”, said Mr Beavis.
