Melbourne Cup comes to Ballina
There’s a big weekend ahead for the Ballina Jockey Club, which will host the Melbourne Cup on Sunday, October 4, as part of the Cup’s tour of Australia.
The greatest prize in Australian racing will be on display at the Ballina track from 9am until noon.
Cup-winning jockeys Scott Seamer, who lives locally, and Jim Johnson will be there to explain the thrill of riding the winner of the nation’s richest race.
The jockey club has scheduled plenty of entertainment, such as the Kidz Klub, pony rides, and a jumping castle.
Meanwhile, on Monday, October 5, the club will host the Bangalow Cup race meeting.
The prizemoney for the feature race has been raised significantly this year due to the huge success it was last year.
The Bangalow Cup itself, which will be known as the Coopers Shoot Orchards 2009 Frank Scarrabelotti Memorial Bangalow Sky Gold Cup, will have prizemoney of $25,000, which is well over double the prizemoney from last year.
Greg Nash, a Bangalow orchardist and unofficial ambassador to Bangalow, is fully behind making this the best ever Bangalow Cup race meeting.
Greg races a few horses himself, including the very handy horse, Surety, winner of the 2009 Byron Bay Cup.
The Bangalow community have fully sponsored all the races. They love to go racing and have a fun day out. There will be running races for the kids, a Mongrel Boot Throwing competition and fashions on the field.
