Ballina Shire residents urged to ‘think pink’

pinkThe Cancer Council is calling on Ballina Shire residents to ‘think pink’ this October and help raise $2 million across the State for the fight against breast cancer through Pink Ribbon Day.

Held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pink Ribbon Day on 26 October is an opportunity for all Australians to come together and show their support for women affected by breast cancer.

Ballina Shire locations for activities are:

  • Alstonville Plaza Shopping Centre 26th October 9am-5pm
  • Ballina Fair Shopping Centre 26th October 9am-5pm
  • Lion Van River St Ballina 26th October 9am-5pm

“With more than 14,000 women across Australia diagnosed with breast cancer every year, it is likely that someone you know will be affected,” said Sandra Rowan, Community Relations Co-ordinator at Cancer Council NSW’s Alstonville office.

In the Far North Coast Region alone 265 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, Sandra added.

Sandra said that by supporting Pink Ribbon Day, locals can help raise funds for services that support women affected by breast cancer from diagnosis to treatment and through to recovery.

“Cancer Council NSW is investing more than $14 million this year into all cancer research. But while research is extremely important, we can’t forget there are women currently affected by breast cancer who need our support now,” Sandra said.

“Funds from Pink Ribbon Day help us run support services like support groups and the Cancer Helpline (13 11 20) where women can speak to experienced cancer health professionals for advice, information, or to chat to someone who understands what they are going through.

“Money raised also goes towards breast cancer information. Cancer Council encourages women to become aware of breast cancer risks and know how to notice important changes in their breasts. That way they’ll have a better chance of early detection and survival.”
