Rural residents warned to be careful when supplementing water supplies

Ballina Shire Council has warned of the dangers of drawing water from creeks and streams to supplement water supplies.

“No one needs reminding that even on the Northern Rivers we periodically experience dry times,” the council said.

“Many rural residents are used to being cautious with water, but at times even the best-laid plans cannot predict the inevitability of domestic roof-fed rain water supplies running out.

“Council has received an increasing number of inquiries from people seeking to supplement their water tank supply by drawing from creeks and streams.

“Residents should reconsider drawing water from unprotected sources such as creeks and streams as they may be polluted from stock and agricultural activity, urban stormwater and sometimes sewage.

“Pollution is especially a problem during times of low flow and when streams receive the first flush of rainfall after long dry periods.

“Drinking polluted water may result in gastro-enteritis or other water-borne illnesses.

“For those wanting to supplement their water supplies for drinking and domestic purposes, council suggests using town water delivered by a reputable water carrier who has been issued with a Rous Water permit.

“Ensure you book a carter prior to running out of water as carters are very busy in times of water shortage. A list of water carriers can be located under ‘water cartage’ in the local phone directory.”
