Landscape design for Ballina bypass interchange on display
The landscape design options for the Ballina bypass interchange at Teven Road will be on display for comment.
An RTA spokesperson said that the RTA wants to create an attractive and practical gateway into Ballina that reflects the character of the area and its residents.
“Two urban landscaping design options have been developed for the major interchange to be built at Teven Road, on the southern end of the Bypass,” the spokesperson said.
“Comment is invited on each of these two design options.
“In addition, a landscaping design for the Cumbalum interchange has also been developed for the northern end of the bypass.
“All three landscape designs will be on display at the Ballina Fair Shopping Centre on 27 and 28 November, where forms will be available for people to write their comments.
“The landscape designs have been developed to show motorists that they are entering or leaving Ballina.
“All the designs have been developed in consultation with community representatives.
“The designs celebrate the traditional view of Ballina as a place of plenty, with a strong connection to water and marine themes.
“Colours, textures, materials and plantings have been carefully chosen to reflect local.”
The RTA and Ballina Shire Council will then choose one of the two designs for the Teven Road interchange and prepare detailed design plans for construction of both interchanges.
“The decision will take into account community comments, ongoing maintenance costs, and the ease of construction,” the spokesperson said.
The section from Cumbalum to Ross Lane is scheduled for completion by late 2010 and the section to the Bruxner Highway opening in mid-2012.
The RTA has formed an alliance with Leighton Contractors, AECOM, SMEC and Coffey Geotechnics to design and construct the Ballina bypass section of the Pacific Highway upgrade.
The project will provide 11.5 kilometres of double lane divided road extending from south of Ballina at the intersection of the Bruxner and Pacific Highways to north of Ballina at the intersection of Ross Lane at Tintenbar.
Comment forms and more information can be found on the Pacific Highway section of the RTA website at www.rta.nsw.gov.au/pacific (click on Ballina bypass).

Both options for the design of the Teven Road Interchange Roundabout are of excellent quality, and esthetically beautiful and are in keeping with Ballina. The thing is, it’s a road we’re talking about, and when driving on a road it’s best to keep your eyes on it, or you’re an accident waiting to happen.
The brochure I saw, told me how the designs will be seen by motorists, as a story that unfolds as you travel around the roundabout. So, as you’re watching how “the contours and ripples create the organic order within the elements”, you could bump into the car next to you and have more contours and ripples but on the side of your car.
If my opinion appears negative and worthless, let’s go with option one. It’s more simple than option two.
