Anderson’s Tintenbar garden opens for inspection

Carefully selected foliage contrasts in leaf colours and shape are the design highlight of Bob and Coleen Anderson’s garden at 152 Foresters Way, Tintenbar, opening for Australia’s Open Garden Scheme on the weekend of November 28 and 29.

Visitors will be immediately impressed by the specimen Gletitsia “Sunburst” at the entrance, leading to a curved hedge lined with blue agapanthus.

They will be further impressed to learn that the Andersons have created this garden in only six years.

Formal hedges of different colours and leaf shapes contrast with more relaxed plantings of hydrangeas, daylilies and daisies in blues, whites and yellows.

The selective use of a limited palette of colours gives a restful and refined aura.

“Coleen started planning the garden as soon as we moved in, having brought over 500 potted plants from our farm in Alstonville,” explains Bob.

“Developing our garden has not been without its challenges. We have had a constant battle with the native wildlife, primarily the swamp wallabies that eat any tender new growth, creating many setbacks and forcing us to use temporary fencing until plants become established.”

A section dedicated to tropical plants contains brugmansias, crotons, bromeliads, hibiscus, palms, strelitzias, ixoras, acalyphas and heliconias.

Sweeping lawns provide linkage between the formal section of layered hedges close to the house and the abundant tropical area.

Mature trees, including liquidambar and Queensland tree waratah, give an established feel to this well-groomed garden.

Morning and afternoon teas will be available as well as a stall of home-grown plants for sale.

Charities to benefit from Andersons’s garden opening are the Inner Wheel Club of Alstonville raising funds for Cord Blood research and Heartfelt House in Alstonville providing support for victims of abuse.
