Retiring Ballina High principal named Citizen of the Year

Retiring Ballina High School principal Ros Mayberry is the Ballina Shire Citizen of the Year.

The award was announced during today’s Australia Day ceremony at Fawcett Park, Ballina.

Ms Mayberry taught at Ballina High for 28 years.

The Young Australian of the Year award went to Kylie Izzard, 17.

Trudie Nash was named Volunteer of the Year, while the Alstonville/Wollongbar branch of Quota International took out the Community Event of the Year
category for its annual arts and craft fair.

Outstanding young surf lifesaver and rugby league player Jay Meaney, 14, of East Ballina, won the Sportsperson of the Year award.

Former Olympic swimming star Shane Gould was Ballina’s Australia Day ambassador, and she spoke of the need for local people to protect their environment.

Five citizens were naturalised: Jaime Maung, Chetan Narsey, Bryan Watson, Diana Williams and Rhys Williams.
