Put your best foot forward for Ballina’s pedestrian plan

Ballina Shire Council needs your support in drafting its next pedestrian plan.

The 2010 review of its Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) is now under way.

The plan investigates pedestrian areas and road user behaviour.

Nominated areas are then analysed against a list of objective criteria to come up with a prioritised program of works over a five-year period.

The last PAMP was completed in 2004 and nominated 140 capital works and 47 maintenance items. The council says s significant number of the highest-priority items have now been completed.

Joe Pereira is conducting the 2010 review on behalf of Ballina Shire Council. He urged the community to come forward with its suggestions on how to improve the pedestrian network.

“We’re looking for local knowledge here, whether you’re on foot or on a mobility scooter,” he said.

“Basically, there are three main questions we need to answer. Firstly, we need to know where pedestrians travel within the Shire. What streets do they use and routes do they take?

“Secondly, where are the major problem locations? And finally what facilities could we provide or upgrade to improve safety, access and mobility?”

The final PAMP will help in making land-use planning decisions as it charts a systematic plan for upgrading pedestrian facilities.

To assist information gathering, Ballina Shire Council has a series of maps covering its various towns and villages, and people who wish to identify an area for attention should download them from the council website and mark up the maps. Go to www.ballina.nsw.gov.au and type ‘PAMP’ into the search box.

Alternatively, phone Joe Pereira on 6686 1458 to arrange a map package to be sent to you.

Completed maps should be posted back to Council by 12 March 2010 or can be collected by a PAMP team member.
