Launch of Driver Survivor

After 30 month’s research and conversations with thousands of road users Sunday March 28 marks the launch of NSW road safety initiative Driver Survivor Inc. at Kingsford Smith Park – Ballina.

The morning commences at 10:00am with NSW Ambulance Service Chaplain the Reverend Graeme R Davis and Police Chaplain the Reverend Ron Law conducting a service of remembrance for all the men, women and children who have lost their lives in road crashes across the country.  Organisers – COASTTOCOAS100 will then outline plans to establish a road safety specific entity – similar to CrimeStoppers – the largest, community based road safety initiative ever implemented in Australian history – communities working with Police specifically targeting dangerous drivers in an effort to stem the carnage on our roads.

Attendance and displays from the following emergency service and road safety groups is anticipated on the day:  Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Police Highway Patrol and Accident Investigation personnel, State Emergency Service, NSW Ambulance, NSW Fire Service, Southern Cross Lads, NSW Roads and Traffic Authority.

* The 2009 NSW road toll was 20% higher than the 2008 NSW road toll
* The 2010 NSW road toll is already 20% higher that the 2009 road toll for the same period.
* Deaths from NSW P-plate crashes are the highest in six years

The most poignant feature of the day will be a 500m long pathway meandering through the displays on which 465 pairs of shoes will be placed – reminders of the men, women and children who lost their lives on NSW roads in 2009.

Through an extensive media campaign, the community will be asked
to donate pre-loved shoes.
Local and national business and members of the community will then be invited to purchase the shoes – the proceeds of which will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Rod Hannifey to enable both to continue their work
Please sponsor this important event by purchasing a pair of shoes

Sponsor cards will be placed on the pathway next to individual pairs of shoes detailing your business name and generous donation.

School Principals have been asked to encourage their students to take advantage of this gathering of experienced road safety, crash investigation, rescue and  law enforcement personnel  on the day to discuss the multitude of issues involved in this complex area.

Local Church Leaders have been invited to bring their congregations to join in the service in the park. Please bring your family and friends and join us too.
