Ballina Shire to celebrate NAIDOC Week

During the week commencing 4 July, NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week is being acknowledged in Ballina Shire.

Celebrated across Australia in July each year, NAIDOC recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The 2010 National NAIDOC theme is ‘Unsung Heroes – Closing the Gap by Leading Their Way’, which recognises the parts played by quiet achievers in the Indigenous community, both currently and in the past.

Ballina Shire Council is pleased to be once again collaborate with local Aboriginal service providers and community members to plan this year’s NAIDOC Week activities.

Council’s Mayor, Councillor Phillip Silver, is encouraging strong community participation in NAIDOC Week.

“This is a time for showing our appreciation of Aboriginal culture and our commitment toachieve equality both broadly and in the context of our own local area,” the Mayor said.

“Whilst a number of important activities are scheduled for NAIDOC Week, a focus will be on our annual Celebration Walk through the Ballina Town Centre on Monday 5 July, commencing at 9.30am.

“Residents of the shire are all welcome to join in the walk and representatives of our local community groups and service clubs are encouraged to show their support.”
