Surf school operators can tender to operate in Ballina Shire

Surf SchoolBallina Shire Council is calling for tenders for the operation of surf schools, stand-up paddle schools and elite surf or specialist surf schools.

Council is offering three (3) surf school licences, three (3) stand-up paddle schools licences and four (4) licences for elite surf or specialist surf schools.

“This is a significant change for Ballina Shire as in the past, licences have been reissued to the same operators each year and with a limited number of licences available new operators were unable to enter the market,” the council said.

“Council receives many enquiries from people wanting to start up surf-based businesses, and under council’s recently revised Commercial Activities on Public Land Policy, these licences now require
open tendering.

“Council is also offering a variety of surf-based licences to meet the changing needs of the surf tourism industry.

“Stand-up surfing is a new sport and there is much interest in starting schools that provide this activity.

“There has also been interest from professional surf coaches wanting to provide a different surfing operation and so a new licence will be available to these operators.

“Council needs to manage the number and size of operators on the shire’s beaches and ensure that they do not adversely impact recreational beach users.

“Council also recognises that surf schools provide a unique visitor experience and it is important that the shire has professional and reputable operators providing these popular activities.”

Tenders close 2pm Tuesday 14 September 2010. Tender documents are available from Ballina Shire Council and website www.tenderlink.com/ballina
