August 27 is Daffodil Day

Ballina Shire residents are being encouraged to support Daffodil Day, The Cancer Council’s biggest annual nationwide fundraiser. Daffodil Day, to be held on Friday, August 27, raises money for The Cancer Council’s research, advocacy, information and support services.

In 2009, more than $9 million was raised across Australia.

“Daffodil Day is one of our most-loved fundraising events,” Cancer Council Project Co-ordinator Debbie Smith said.

Daffodil Day merchandise is currently being sold at a number of local businesses, and can be ordered through The Cancer Council’s Far North Coast office in Alstonville.

“Most people know they can buy a daffodil and other items on the official day, but many people don’t realise they can help raise funds all through August by ordering one of our merchandise boxes,” Ms Smith said.

Over the past year, Cancer Council has used ‘daffodil dollars’ to fund more than $14 million worth of cancer research in NSW alone.

Money also goes towards information and prevention programs, and services for cancer patients and their carers, family and friends.

Some of the services available include booklets and brochures, online information, and The Cancer Council Helpline, a free and confidential telephone information and support service staffed by experienced cancer health professionals.

Callers can access the Helpline 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, by phoning 13 11 20, or TTY (02) 9334 1865 if they are hearing-impaired.

“One of our current regional projects is assisting with funding for the Our House project in Lismore, which will provide accommodation for patients and carers who travel to Lismore for treatment at the newly opened Integrated Cancer Care Centre,” Ms Smith said.

The Cancer Council is also looking for more people to donate their time and volunteer on the official day to run sites across the Far North Coast region.

“The success of Daffodil Day each year relies on the support of over 10,000 volunteers across the country,” Ms Smith said. “We’ve had a wonderful response from locals so far, but we would still love to have more volunteers register.”
