Ballina Shire Council announces events funding

Ballina Shire Council has announced that five events, including three new ones, have been successfully funded in the 2010/11 Festivals and Events Support Program.

The Festivals and Events Support Program was released 1 July 2010 providing Ballina Shire festivals and events the opportunity to access up to $50,000 in funding for 2010/11.

Council met on Thursday 26 August, 2010, to allocate the funding. The following events have been successful:

  • Alstonville Apex New Year’s Eve Family Festival
  • Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Boat and Leisure Show
  • Lennox National Surfing Reserve Coastal Lifestyle Expo
  • Rotary Club of Ballina on Richmond Food and Wine Festival
  • Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore Surf Life Saving Club’s The Ballina Island Paddle Challenge

Council received 13 applications and believes the funding will enable the events to grow and attract additional visitors, both within and outside of the Northern Rivers.

Mayor Cr Phillip Silver said that all of the successful events will deliver a number of economic, social and environmental benefits to the community.

“This program is a positive step forward in enabling Council to support festivals and events put forward by not-for-profit community-based organisations,” he said.

The Boat and Leisure Show will be held on 9 & 10 October at Seagulls Football Club Ground.

The Ballina Island Paddle Challenge will be held on 10 October, creating a number of activities and entertainment on offer for all the community.

The Coastal Lifestyle Expo will be held on 28 November at Ballina RSL Club.

These are three new events for the Ballina Shire and are expected to attract approximately 8000 people.

The Apex family celebrations in Alstonville have been held for a number of years and will continue to be a stand-alone New Year’s Eve event.

The Ballina Fine Food and Wine Festival will be held on 29 May 2011 received an overwhelming response in its first year.

The Festivals and Events Program 2011/12 will open again early next year to ensure that events commencing 1 July 2011 are eligible for entry.
