Get on your bike this Sunday

Ballina Shire residents are being invited to take part in NSW Bike Week in Ballina on Sunday, September 26.

NSW Bike Week is being celebrated across New South Wales from 18 September to 26 September and its aim is to raise the profile of cycling as a healthy, easy, low-cost and environmentally friendly alternative to driving for short trips in the local community.

“Travelling by bike to school, work or to collect the milk and bread is a less stressful alternative to driving during peak traffic periods, and the easiest way to find 30 minutes of exercise per day to increase your fitness, concentration and well being,” says Jodie Hewett, Ballina Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer.

“Ballina Shire Council is urging anyone who enjoys cycling to grab their helmet and jump on their bike to attend Ballina Council’s Bike Week event this Sunday 26 September at Missingham Park, corner Kingsford Smith Drive and Bentinck Street, Ballina.”

The day kicks off at 9am with a 15 kilometre social ride for the more experienced rider and a shorter 5 kilometre ride for beginners and families. The social rides will be followed by bicycle maintenance checks, tips on road safety, road rules, promotion of council’s shared pathways, sun safety information and a free BBQ for all participants, provided by Ballina SES.

The activities will take place at Missingham Park from 9am–noon this Sunday and will be co-ordinated by Ballina Shire Council, local bicycle retailers and members of Ballina’s Bicycle User Group.

Ballina’s Bike Sunday is sponsored by the RTA as part of NSW Bike Week. For more information on NSW Bike Week visit www.rta.nsw.gov.au
