Northern Rivers Community Gallery hosts Caldera awards exhibition
The 2010 Caldera Art Awards exhibition promises to inspire, surprise and educate audiences – featuring over 60 artworks ranging from traditional oil paintings to contemporary sculptures.
Each artwork explores aspects of the stunning flora, fauna, landscape and environmental sustainability of the Mount Warning Wollumbin Caldera.
“The Caldera Art Awards is much more than an art exhibition,” said Awards Organiser, Andy Reimanis.
“The underlying aim is to educate people about the unique biodiversity and geography of this distinctive region and to foster an understanding of the need for conservation and sustainable practices.
“As such, we invite artists to present their own personal interpretation of the landscape and how it inspires their creativity, with the judging based on a combination of artistic value and the message they are conveying. This year the Awards attracted over 120 entries.”
Several entrants have adopted an innovative approach to interpreting the theme, including formerTweed Naturally Art winner, Barry Henderson, who has submitted a coffin bearing replicas of threatened local fauna.
“It is particularly pleasing to see that the program has appealed to a wide range of ages,” said Mr Reimanis.
“At just 14 years old, Rhiannon Atchison is our youngest ever entrant and an outstanding talent.”
The 67 finalists will be on display at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery in Ballina from Wednesday 13 October until Sunday 7 November 2010.
The winner of the 2010 Caldera Art Awards will be announced at the official opening, 6pm on Friday 15 October 2010.
The artworks will be for sale for the duration of the exhibition.
