Major upgrades for Ballina and Lennox Head Wastewater Treatment Plants

Ballina Shire Council has announced it has awarded a contract to Haslin Constructions Pty Ltd to undertake a major upgrade of the wastewater treatment plants that service Ballina and Lennox Head.

The project which will commence in early March is estimated to cost $45 million and take two years to complete.

The Ballina wastewater treatment plant was constructed in 1970 and upgraded in 1974. The plant is now at capacity and this project will enable sufficient capacity for the expected population in 2026, the council said.

A project to expand the capacity and improve the performance of the facility at Lennox Head is in the final phase of construction. This next upgrade will introduce a recycled water plant.

“As well as providing essential community infrastructure, this project will provide significant environmental benefits. The new treatment facilities will improve the quality of water discharged to the marine environment and importantly, the high quality of the water will allow it to be reused in our urban open space areas and be supplied to new households for toilet
flushing and outdoor use,” Mayor Phillip Silver said.

“This reuse of water will be a major reduction in the demands on the region’s water supplies.”
