Ballina Bypass ‘GATEWAY’ Roundabout Opens
Member for Ballina, Don Page MP is pleased to advise that the Ballina bypass Teven Road roundabout, featuring Indigenous designs developed with local land councils, will open to traffic on Thursday 19 May.
“The Teven Road roundabout’s design is the result of close consultation between the RTA and the Ballina community,” Mr Page said.
“Two options for the roundabout’s design were developed in consultation with Bundjalung and Jali artists and elders and the Numbahging traditional owners of the land.
“The design options were displayed for community comment in November 2009.
“The chosen design is influenced by local Indigenous culture and history.
“The roundabout is referred to as the gateway roundabout, because it will serve as the primary route to and from Ballina for people travelling the Pacific Highway,” Mr Page said
The opening of the gateway roundabout will result in changed traffic conditions on the Ballina bypass. At around 12pm on 19 May traffic will be moved onto the newly opened roundabout. Wet weather may change the time.
“Motorists are advised to take care, slow down and be roadwork aware while driving on the newly opened sections of the bypass,” Mr Page said.
The opening of the gateway roundabout is the next phase of the ongoing work to build the Ballina bypass. On Tuesday 1 March 2011 the 5.9 kilometre northern section from Cumbalum to Ross Lane opened.
The completed Ballina bypass will be 12 kilometres of four-lane divided road extending from south of Ballina at the intersection of the Bruxner and Pacific highways, to Cumbalum. The $640 million project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments and is due to open to traffic by mid 2012.
The bypass will improve road safety and traffic flow, while providing easier access to and from the Pacific Highway for local traffic.
The RTA has formed an alliance with Leighton Contractors, Maunsell AECOM, SMEC and Coffey Geotechnics to design and build the bypass.
