Ballina Rolls out New 3-Bin Waste Service
Residents living in urban areas will soon be able to recycle more of their garbage waste. The new garden and organics waste service, that will commence 4 July, was launched this week to an attentive and enthusiastic crowd at Ballina Public School.
The North East Waste Forum was also on hand displaying the ‘The Green House: Living with Less Waste’ mobile waste education trailer. They also provided informative entertainment while delivering key environmental messages including the benefits of removing garden and organics from the waste stream in helping to reduce landfill.
Ballina Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Phillip Silver said “Ballina Shire residents should be commended for their recycling efforts to date. Embracing the new garden and organics service will mean that we can recycle up to 50% more. This will mean a significant increase of waste being diverted from landfill and being converted into other useful material such as compost and mulch.
This new service should be celebrated and what better way than launching it to a captive audience such as school students who can help drive the message home.”
Residents should expect the delivery of their new garden and organics bin during June. This will be accompanied with detailed information on collection weeks and what to put in each bin. Collection days remain the same. The first week of the new service commences 4 July 2011 with both the garden/organics bin and the recycling bin being collected. In the second week of the new service, 11 July 2011, the garden/organics bin and the mixed (residual) waste bin will be collected.
