Social Networking Good or Bad?
We all know that social networking sites have been great for businesses, marketing and keeping in touch with loved ones, particularly from afar and when travelling, but are there times when we should leave well enough alone? Can curiosity kill the cat?
Just recently the husband of a friend of mine, we will call him Ted, started searching through Facebook for his childhood sweetheart. It wasn’t long and he made contact with her. They exchanged a flurry of messages, phone calls and emails, and it wasn’t long, that it became apparent that the sweetheart had somewhere along the passage of life, turned into a barracuda, and was looking for much more than just
friendship.
There is also the constant bullying of young people, that we hear so much about, through the media.
More recently the practice of ‘planking’, are we so desperate for 5 minutes of cyber fame, or have some people lost touch with the real consequences of these actions.
Have we become desensitised through escaping into virtual realities of our choosing, by playing games, where you can become anything you want to be and play out a life or several, that has no connection with reality.
I wonder if this is just another example of new inventions being on the whole, a good thing for society, just like the invention of the wheel, as it is used more and more, there are going to be victims and casualties. What do you think?
Do we need to remind ourselves that you are basically meeting and greeting your friends in a public place observed by all your friends, relatives and colleagues and all their friends, friends etc, maybe we need to be more familiar with privacy settings. Should we be more selective in who we add as friends, rather than concentrate on having large numbers. What do you think?
Are we setting ourselves up for pain and suffering by exposing our personal details on these sites? Or should we simply have more self discipline. Do the Social Networking sites have any moral obligations to protect us from misuse? What do you think?
