Ballina Shire NAIDOC Week Celebrations – 3 to 10 July 2011

Ballina Shire Council will once again collaborate with local Aboriginal service providers and community members to hold NAIDOC Week Celebrations from 3 to 10 July. Celebrated across Australia in July each year, NAIDOC recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The 2011 National NAIDOC theme is ‘Change: The Next Step is Ours’, which is about taking responsibility for the future.
The annual Celebration Walk to be held on Monday 4 July will be a focal point of the week-long activities. The Walk commences at 10.00am from the Ballina RSL Club and will move along River Street finishing at the Ballina Visitor Information Centre. Following will be the Welcome to Country and flag raising ceremony at 10.45am. Residents of the shire are warmly welcome to join in the Walk and local community groups and service clubs are encouraged to show their support.
The public and business owners are reminded that a temporary road closure for vehicle access will be in place for the duration of the Walk. The closure will be along River Street, from Grant Street, Moon Street, Cherry Street, Martin Street to Las Balsas Plaza. Council respectfully requests that the public observe changed traffic conditions and obey all temporary signage.
A number of other activities have been organised for NAIDOC Week including a Stalls Day at Ballina Amphitheatre, Sports Day at Kingsford Smith Oval and a Family Day at Captain Cook Park on the foreshore of the Richmond River. All these events have been coordinated by Aboriginal community groups.
The Northern Rivers Community Gallery in Cherry Street, Ballina will also be hosting a NAIDOC Art Exhibition from Wednesday 29 June to Sunday 17 July. The exhibition includes paintings, ceramics, textiles and mixed media by Aboriginal artists across the Northern Rivers. School holiday workshops hosted by Aboriginal artist Emma Walke will also take place in the Gallery. The exhibition launch to be
held on Sunday 3 July from 11.00am to 1.00pm will also mark the official commencement of Ballina Shire NAIDOC week celebrations.
