Tight finishes in Ballina Jockey Club awards

There were some very tight finishes in the Ballina Jockey Club premiership awards for the 2010/11 racing season.

Three of the four categories were settled by countbacks as second and third placings had to be taken into account to determine the winners.

The awards are determined on results at the Ballina Racecourse for the past season.

In announcing the results, newly appointed Jockey Club general manager, Craig Kelly, said: “Danny Bowen won trainer of the year by a short half head over Stephen Lee after a countback of all placings.

“It was a similar story with apprentice of the year and horse of the year. Gabrielle Coleman just beat Priscilla Schmidt on the finish line after countback and horse of the year was a decided by a similar margin and method, being won by Court Success, trained by Kevin Nipperess.”

“However, jockey of the year was determined by a clear margin with Scott Seamer winning.”

The awards will be presented at the Slipway Hotel during the Ballina Cup Calcutta, Wednesday, 7th September.

“This is sure to be a great evening at the Slipway Hotel. John and Kel are great supporters of racing and are the major sponsors of this years inaugural Slipway Hotel Ballina Cup,” Mr Kelly said.
