Passage of carbon price bills gives momentum to renewable energy
Community group, Ballina Climate Action Network(BCAN), today welcomed the passing of the carbon price bills in the lower house of the federal parliament, stating that it was an important step for helping Ballina make the shift to a cleaner, healthier local economy and environment.
“The passing of the carbon price bills – as well as the announcement of a head for the new renewable energy fund – will be welcomed by communities across Australia who want to see the rapid rollout of renewable energy,” said Tony Gleeson, spokesperson for BCAN
“With the passing of this legislation Australia will be in a much stronger position to power our economy from our abundant natural resources of sun, wind, geothermal and wave.
“This is great news for the North Coast because:
- It will provide a much needed boost for projects like community renewable energy initiatives which are currently being investigated for our region
- it will give us access to larger amounts of clean, renewable energy that will only come down in price.
“We applaud Janelle Saffin for joining with the Government, Greens & Independents in taking this important step.
“Our recent work talking to people in Ballina shows that Australians want to see a rapid transition to renewable energy. They want to see big solar plants built and they want to see our leaders tackle rising energy prices and invest in cheaper sources of power.
BCAN, together with 100% Renewable campaign will be working to ensure that the carbon price and renewable energy fund delivers on its potential of instigating new big solar projects, which can supply baseload power, across the country .
“Today is a good step towards a 100% renewable energy future and shows that we can be more ambitious than we have been until now.
“It’s time to start turning the potential of renewable energy in this country into a reality.”
