A Passiontide meditation in words and music

A combined choir, including members of St Andrew’s Choir Lismore, and Spiritsong, will be performing a meditation in words and song, under the expert direction of Warren Whitney in Ballina on Sunday.

The meditation will express the range of emotions associated with the sorrows and despair of the crucifixion and the hope of the resurrection.

Selections to be performed come from  Chorales by JS Bach, who composed cantatas for each Sunday of the church year, excerpts from Handel’s Messiah, a huge oratorio composed in under a month; Lacrimosa and Amen from Mozart’s unfinished masterpiece, Requiem; as well as his Ave Verum.

More contemporary works including Stainer’s God so loved the world, and pieces from Gabriel Faure, John Rutter and Andrew Lloyd-Webber, will also be on the programme. Music will be interspersed with short contemplative readings.

Palm Sunday, 1 April, 2012 at 2pm in St Mary’s Anglican Church, Ballina.

There also will be a repeat performance on Good Friday, 6 April, at 5.30 pm in St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Lismore.

Free admission. There will be a retiring offering.
