June Exhibition Launch Event Thursday 25 May 2017

Northern Rivers Community Gallery (NRCG), Ballina launches four exciting new exhibitions in June and welcomes community and visitors to join us in the Gallery.

The Topography of Virtual Worlds | Steve Kelly
The Topography of Virtual Worlds exhibition showcases a series of imagined worlds created using the artists own photographs combined with 3D modelling software . Inspired by science fiction and fantasy the artist manipulates photographs to create intriguing landscapes as symbolic representations of the artist’s spiritual beliefs. Steve Kelly is a local artist with a background in visual art and photography education.

Indigenous Landscape | Richard Tabaka
Indigenous Landscape creates an illusory world of blurred boundaries between landscape, creative imagination, documentation and fiction. The photographs transcend a normal and expected view of Australian landscape, leaving reality almost illegible. In its place, are abstracted artworks that a viewer can interpret for themselves. Richard Tabaka has worked extensively as a commercial photographer, while maintaining a fine art photographic practice.

This Storm is Called Progress | Grayson Cooke and Dugal McKinnon
This Storm is Called Progress is a dual-screen audio-visual installation, a collaboration between media artist Grayson Cooke, and composer Dugal McKinnon. Cooke’s footage of the Naracoorte Caves in South Australia is juxtaposed against time-lapse video of Landsat satellite images of Antarctic ice shelves, and acoustically framed by McKinnon’s electronic score. The project pits the “deep time” of ancient geological formations against the time of the present, a technologically amplified time exemplified by the speeding-by of satellite images of ice shelves.

The Wind Never Sleeps | Paul Harrington
Two mesmerising kinetic wind sculptures by local artist, Paul Harrington, will be installed in the Gallery garden. The works, stimulated by the wind, create art in motion by responding to the natural environment

The exhibitions open Wednesday 24 May 2017 and continue until Sunday 25 June 2017. The official launch event is Thursday 25 May from 5.30pm – 7.30pm and all are welcome to attend.
