Richmond River Dolphins — SCU Study Reveals Local Population

Richmond River Dolphins

A Southern Cross University (SCU) study revealed that a resident population of bottlenose dolphins calls the Richmond River home. The research, conducted by marine scientists at SCU’s National Marine Science Centre, documented the dolphins’ movements, behaviour and habitat use within the river system around Ballina.

The study found that the dolphins use the lower reaches of the Richmond River for feeding, socialising and resting. Sightings are common around the Missingham Bridge area, Burns Point Ferry and the river mouth near the breakwalls.

The presence of dolphins in the Richmond River is a sign of a healthy river ecosystem and has become a beloved feature of Ballina life. Locals and visitors regularly spot dolphins from riverside walking paths and parks.
